On 10 September, in her State of the European Union address, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, delivered a clear message: digital innovation is no longer optional but a necessity. Among other points, she stressed the need to unlock the “full potential of digital technologies” through new European initiatives, such as those focused on cloud computing and artificial intelligence. What does this mean for organisations and businesses in the health sector in Greece?

New European tools – new opportunities

The European Union is moving forward with a series of projects and actions that create new ground for those who wish to actively participate in the digital transformation of health. Among the most important initiatives that stakeholders should be aware of are the European Health Data Space, the Tech4Cure project, and the new European Strategy for Cloud and Artificial Intelligence.

European Health Data Space (EHDS)

This is a new European infrastructure that will allow patients and healthcare professionals to access medical data securely, transparently and based on common standards. This translates into faster decision-making, improved care, and a new foundation for research and innovation.

New European strategy for cloud and artificial intelligence

Here, the goal is to promote the development and adoption of digital applications across the EU through a simplified regulatory framework. In essence, the European Commission aims to strengthen competitiveness and foster collaboration among Member States, research centres and businesses.

What does this mean for the health sector in Greece?

Across the EU, the digital transition in health, as in other sectors, is rapidly moving from theory to practice. For hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, research organisations and businesses in Greece, this development creates opportunities for growth, partnerships, funding and investment. Those who prepare early will gain a clear advantage in the fast-evolving digital transition of the EU.
