New Horizon Europe: a window of opportunity for the healthcare sector

Your paragraph text (3)

The European Commission announced its new long-term budget for the period 2028–2034, proposing a doubling of Horizon Europe funding to €175 billion. This represents a strong political statement: innovation and research are no longer secondary priorities — they are at the core of the EU’s strategy for competitiveness and social progress.

Health and innovation at the forefront

A significant share of this new budget will be directed toward health-related projects. From artificial intelligence supporting clinical decision-making to the advancement of biotechnology research, the EU is investing in the real-world deployment of innovations that are transforming healthcare services.

What does this mean for the healthcare sector in Greece?

The increase in funding opens new doors for participation in ambitious European programmes, but it also comes with higher expectations: strategic readiness, technical capacity, and the ability to connect and collaborate with international partners.

What stakeholders need

Healthcare organisations that aim to secure meaningful benefits from Horizon Europe need the following:

  • Strong proposal preparation, from shaping the initial idea to drafting the full application and defining a strategy that stands out during evaluation.
  • Access to expertise and modern infrastructures, in order to test, refine and demonstrate the value of their solutions before implementation.
  • Connections with investors, partners and EU networks, to secure support, funding and collaborations at European level.
  • Guidance on intellectual property and regulatory compliance, to protect innovations and avoid barriers to market entry.
  • Skills development in AI and digital health, to fully leverage the technological opportunities emerging in the healthcare sector.
